AAOS member Glenn Lehr recently took a trip to Tokyo for the 1998 Japan Grand Prix International Orchid Festival, a 10 day orchid show that dwarfs most of the shows that we have around here. Glenn will talk about the trip and show slides of this event which draws nearly a half-million visitors.
Remember, the May meeting will be on Saturday, May 9th, instead of our usual Sunday time due to Mother's Day. Setup and schmooze time will begin at 2:00 PM, with the program starting at 2:30 PM.
Don't forget to bring orchids in flower for our show tables, with orchid species on one table, and hybrids on the other. And of course our members are always encouraged to bring clean, healthy orchids for our Silent Auction and Raffle Table
Annual Election
After the program we will hold our annual elections. The nominating committee has selected the following candidates to run for office. Additional nominations will be taken from the floor before the election.
Harry Winter-President
Glen Lehr-Vice President
Dianna Borel-Secretary
Susan Crippen-Treasurer
Neal Foster-Director
Festival Results, Part 1
Congratulations to Lynn O'Shaughnessy for being awarded the AOS Show Trophy for best exhibit, as judged by the AOS Judges. She narrowly won over Taylor Orchids, who also had a magnificent exhibit. Ron did get Best of Show with his Chysis (again). Lynn also got the President's Trophy and Ray McCullough Award, while our society got the People's Choice Award as voted by the visiting public. Ron's exhibit came in second, and Toledo came in third. This is the first exhibit they've done in a while, and we're glad they came. Also a big hit were Barb Leavitt's bright paintings, and the Matthaei orchid painting collection, which livened up some of the stark auditorium walls. We will have ribbon winners listed in the next newsletter.
Orchid Field Trip & Open House
Our first field trip to observe native orchids has been scheduled for Saturday, May 30. We will meet at Glenn Lehr's house in Manchester at 8:30 am, and go to Sharon Hollow not far away. Last year we saw Lady's Slippers, Puttyroots, and Showy Orchis. We should finish by noon, and then Glenn has invited us for lunch at his place, followed by Glenn's Open House. He will provide hot dogs, salads and drinks. You can bring additional foods if you wish. You may either stay at Glenn's, or see more orchids near Chelsea. There are several nice spots in and around the Waterloo Recreation Area, Park Lyndon North, and also on Don Fishel's Property. We'll head up there if there are enough who wish to go. Most areas are easily accessible, with just a little standing water. We will go rain or shine, so come prepared. We will have more details at the May meeting. Call Alex at 971-6186 for details.
Ann Arbor Orchid Festival
I would like to thank everyone that participated in the AAOS display. There was a lot of effort put into it by a lot of people. In particular I would like to thank Susan and Harry for arriving early to put up the display and then staying until the very end of the day to help with all the work. Thanks to Harry for running out for parts for the water pump and to Duane Duman for getting it working. Thanks to Paige for her energetic enthusiasm and great work on the water fall, Barb Leavitt for the moss work around the waterfall, and Dianna Borel for arranging plants so pleasingly in the display. Thanks to all the tall guys for mossing and covering the plants that no one else could reach. Thanks to all the mossers and the reg tag putter-oners and taker-offers (you know what I mean). And especially thanks to the cleaner-uppers. There are many others that I didn't mention by name here that stepped in to do whatever needed to be done. It was a great team effort by the club and you should all be very proud.
