In the flurry of preparations for our Orchid Festival last April, we neglected to
announce that some plants from Matthaei's Orchid Collection had been given
cultural or other awards by the Great Lakes Regional Judging Center of the
American Orchid Society. On March 16, 1996, Certificates of Cultural Merit (CCM)
were awarded for MGB's Dendrobium veratrifolium Elizabeth' (83 points), Jumella
sagittata Matthaei Gardens' (90 points), and a Certificate of Botanical
Recognition (CBR) to Epidendrum leucochilum Matthaei Gardens'.
Oncidium Illustre Matthaei' (81 points) also received a CCM in February.
It was previously awarded a Highly Commended Certificate (HCC, 78 points)
in March of 1994. Hearty
congratulations to Connie and all her AAOS volunteers --these awards amply
demonstrate how skillfully the orchids are now being grown and cared for at
Matthaei!
