Loans of Orchid-Related Items Needed for AAOS Display at District Library--on
February 1st, 1997, we'll set up an educational display (in four L-shaped,
locked, glass-fronted cases, each one foot deep, 7 feet high, with glass shelves)
in the lower level of the Ann Arbor District Library. The purpose of the display
will be to educate laypeople about various aspects of the orchid hobby and the
study of orchids. Some of the display materials have been used in previous
educational exhibits set up at local and regional orchid shows. There will be no
live orchids in the display, although there may be a flask or two showing the
sterile technique of orchid seed germination.
The display will include the following:
(1) Brief background of history, purpose, and activities of the AAOS; Open
Invitation to upcoming meetings and local orchid shows; Clippings, posters, and
photographs about previous events;
(2) General introduction to orchid biology and orchid conservation. This will
include several large color orchid photographs;
(3) Description of how orchids are being grown in and around Ann Arbor by AAOS
members: indoors on window sills, in greenhouses, under lights, and outdoors in
summer; illustrated with large color photographs;
(4) Recommended sources of additional information: organizations, books and
magazines, internet resources;
(5) Displays of various orchid-related collectibles: pins and jewelry, stamps,
porcelain, paintings and other graphic art, photographs, cross-stitch, clothing,
antiquarian orchid books, hand colored engravings, color lithographs, etc.
If you'd like to help design and set up this display, or if you have some
material to loan that you think would be suitable to include, contact Neal Foster
at 994-3331, x264 (w) or 663-0756 (h); e-mail:

the way of a postcard in late November. Baiba is looking forward to not only
hosting this year's Holiday Party but is excited of the proposition of having her
house filled with beautiful orchids in bloom, so let's not let her down and bring
a plant for display and help decorate Baiba's home for the party.
Like previous years this will be a potluck during the early afternoon hours.

able to maintain our web site. Dennis Moser will take over this responsibility.
Dennis presently maintains the web site for the Michigan Orchid Society and
professionally writes electronic magazines so he comes with plenty of skill and
experience. A large Thank You to Nick for getting this off and running and a
large Thank You to Dennis for taking on this valuable function of our society.
