Ann Arbor Orchid Society General Business Meeting 10/13/96
The meeting convened at 2:30.
September Minutes - The minutes were approved as written.
President - Connie Bailie introduced the new members. There were
eleven new members present and one guest.
Vice President - No report.
Secretary - No report.
Treasurer - Nick reported that the raffle table at the September
meeting brought in $66. The silent auction bought in $107. Six dollars
was collected from the purchase of society mementos. The treasury
currently contains $2100 after paying speaker fees for September and
other club fees.
Membership - Joanie Quinn has the roster ready for distribution when
a list of current members is available. The roster will be distributed
in February. Members were encouraged to include their E-mail address
along with other information in the roster.
Newsletter - Neal Foster thanked Alex for putting together the
newsletter for October. Jerry Kelly will be responsible for compiling
the plant table information for the newsletter. Neal encouraged members
to submit articles for the newsletter by E-mail or by conventional
methods.
Library Report - Alex has requested help with the library. The
library activities have gotten to be too large for one person alone to
handle. Dianna Borel, Don Fishel, Christa Janecke, and Rob Loechel will
be the new librarians. Members can also help the library grow by
contributing money (adopt a book program) or by donating books for use
by the library.
Program - Alex informed the membership that the November program
would be a discussion by several society members on indoor growing. Both
window sill and light setups will be covered. Suzi Porter will be
discussing mini-catts in January. In March members will share their
experiences growing orchids outdoors in the summer.
Shows - Setup for the Traverse City Show will take place Oct. 25.
The show is on Oct. 26 and 27. Plants for the show should be dropped off
at Alex's on Wednesday or Thursday night. John asked members interested
in helping out to see him before the end of the meeting. The
Saginaw show will be the weekend after Thanksgiving. The Ann Arbor Flower Show
theme this year is "An American Bouquet."
Ann Arbor Orchid Festival - The AAOS Orchid Festival will be April
18 - 20 1997 at Matthaei. Invitations to AOS judges have gone out.
Vendors from last years show will be asked to participate. Planning
meetings will begin soon and continue through earl 1997.
General Membership Announcements - Baiba Shimmell announced that she
was willing to hold the Christmas party at her home this year on
December 15, 1997. The invitation was gratefully accepted.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:43.

Ann Arbor Orchid Society General Business Meeting 11/10/96
Seventy nine people attended the meeting. The meeting convened at
2:30.
October Minutes - The minutes were not published in the November
newsletter and therefore could not be reviewed.
President - Connie announced that the study group had had its
preliminary meeting before the general meeting. The turn out was very
good and she pronounced the first meeting a success.
Vice President - No report.
Secretary - No report.
Treasurer - Nick Plummer informed the membership that dues for 1997
are now due. The treasury contains $1978.52. The silent auction brought
in $51 in October and the raffle $78.
Membership - No report.
Newsletter - Alex put together the newsletter. The October meeting
minutes were not included.
Budget - The proposed 1997 budget was submitted for membership
approval even though this is not required by the bylaws. Chuck Zill
expressed concern regarding the budget increase. He proposed that the
dues be increased to allow for an increase in the library fund. Connie
agreed to write something up for the next newsletter regarding this
proposal. Neal noted that the raffle table is a major source of income.
It was also noted that purchase of supplies was responsible for the
largest part of the increase in the budget. $1500 is budgeted for
supplies to sell at the AAOS Orchid Festival and at meetings. Last year
this expense was paid for outside of the budget by Glenn Lehr with
reimbursement occurring when the supplies were sold. After discussion
the membership moved to approve the budget. The motion passed.
Library - The library committee is looking for book recommendations.
Shows: John is looking for plants for the Saginaw show.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:47.
