September Meeting: Wardian
Cases
Our next meeting will be on Sunday, September
21st with Malcolm Adams speaking on constructing and growing orchids in Wardian Cases.
Malcolm has designed several cases, and has published several articles and designs.
Wardian Cases are more than just terrariums, but are based on the same principles.
They provide an enclosed environment for better orchid culture, especially with increased
humidity. They may be made of wood or metal, and of glass, plastic or plexiglass.
Malcolm has designed, redesigned and improved his version of the Wardian Case, and
will share his learnings with us. Lighting and air movement will also be discussed.
Setup and schmooze time will begin at 2:00 PM, with the meeting starting at 2:30
PM. Don't forget to bring orchids and orchid related items for the silent auction
and raffle. Remember, the plants must be in good shape, and disease and pest free.

Do You Grow Your Orchids Indoors?
We have received a lot of requests to repeat last November's
meeting on how our own society members grow their orchids indoors. This meeting was
very informal and many felt they learned a great deal from their peers. We don't
want to have the same members as last time, so we are looking for others to share
their knowledge and experiences. If you have a light cart, some fancy set-up, or
grow on only on one windowsill, we are interested. And if you don't speak well in
front of others, we can have someone speak for you! We need about five or six members,
and times will range from five to twenty minutes, depending on how much you wish
to talk.
The meeting will be in November, but we need to get slides taken and developed well
before this. Call Alex at 971-6186.

October Meeting Date Change
The date of our October meeting has been
changed to Saturday, October 18. Andrea Nissen of Cali, Colombia will speak on "Old
& New Exciting Colombian Species", and will be bringing orchids to sell.
Meeting time will be at our usual time at 2:00 pm. This is a home football game for
Michigan, so be aware of any potential traffic problems.
Congratulations, Glenn Lehr!
Glenn Lehr received his first AOS award at the August
meeting of the Great Lakes Judging Center. Phaius humblotii
'Sweet Maria' received an 81 point Award of Merit. The attractive
flowers are a rosy lavender color, not quite two inches across, on an upright spike.
Unfortunately, the flowers won't last to the September meeting, but we will show
a slide or two when we get them. The plant got everybody's notice in August, and
everyone wanted to know where to get one. Glenn got his several years ago from Fred
Hillerman, but Fred is retiring from the orchid business. We pollinated several flowers,
so maybe in a couple of years there will be more available!{Webmaster's note:
We have a photo of the flower! Follow the link on the name above!}

Volunteers Needed!
Some of our volunteer positions have been filled,
and we greatly thank those who will help out. But there are still a couple of important
positions to be filled. Please volunteer, and if you feel you can only help part
time, the positions may be shared. If you don't volunteer, we will be calling you!
Show Set-up Chair: This person does the overall
organization of the orchid shows that we will be exhibiting in, at about eight to
ten shows a year. This person is responsible for communicating between our society
and other orchid societies, and for appointing a Show Coordinator for each show we
do. You won't be in this alone. You will have the board, (for better or for worse)
to assist and guide you!
Show Coordinator: Each show we do will need a coordinator, and this person
is in charge of that one particular show. Duties include exhibit design, organizing
the show assistants and display orchids for that show. We can really use your artistic
talents here.
Publicity: This person sends press releases to the Ann Arbor News, Ann Arbor
Observer, of our meetings & events.
Silent Auction and Raffle: We need some one to assist Lynn O'Shaughnessy with
the silent auction, and a second person to help with the raffle tickets at the meetings.

AAOS Displays
Our Society will be putting in orchid displays in Cleveland
on October 11 & 12, Traverse City on October 25 & 26, and Saginaw in late
November on Thanksgiving Weekend. The first two shows will have 25 square foot exhibits,
and we will put in a 50 square foot exhibit at the Saginaw show. If you would like
to show off your nicer orchids, please contact the Show
Set-up Chair. Oh, that's right, we don't have one
yet. Contact John Lewis at 449-4237, or Alex Challis at 971-6186. We're going to
this show anyway, but we're NOT volunteering to be Show
Set-up Chairs. If you are interested in going to these shows, we will have directions
at the September meeting.
