President's Message
***************************
Here it is September already! - we've seen splotches
of color in the forests on our recent trip to the Grand Traverse area. That means
it will soon be time to bring in the orchids that you put outside just a few months
ago, and it will soon be time to resume our AAOS activities.
I have to report that not much has happened this summer. Of course, we had another
of our successful and fun summer picnics at V-Pres. Glenn Lehr's estate. Though we
missed several of our most active members for various reasons, we also had many new
members in attendance, and a successful silent auction and raffle.
Now it's time to get serious about getting the society organized for the Fall, which
begins with our meeting of September 21st (see the article about this meeting elsewhere
in this newsletter). I realize on rereading my last message that I'm as good as any
politician at breaking promises. I promised in that message that we would hold a
board meeting in late June, but by the time you read this, we will have just held,
or be about about to hold, the first board meeting of this administration. It is
scheduled for September 3rd, which probably has already passed by the time you read
this.
No important issues were left hanging by Connie Bailie's able presidency, so our
major item of business will be to start the budget process for 1998. I had also promised
to have new committee chairs (where necessary)
in place this summer, but it hasn't happened, so we'll also be considering that problem,
and naming names, at that meeting. I asked in that last message for volunteers, or
said I would be calling you. It still could happen - you're not off the hook yet.
As I said before, our most pressing and important needs are for the reception committee
(this doesn't include refreshments any more), and for the show
committee (display design and set-up at orchid shows). Some other position may
be open as well, depending on how present prospects respond. If you're interested
in a specific position, or want to find out how you can help, please call me at (313
761-5859), e-mail at (harwin@umich.edu), fax at (313 763-4581), or send a note to
the club's new post office box (PO Box 130872, Ann Arbor 48113).
By what ever means, I hope to hear from some of you soon - and I hope to see all
of you on September 21. Be sure to bring your favorite blooming orchid for the show
table, and contributions for the raffle table as well. See you there.
Harry Winter
