ORCHID PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARTWORK
Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, January 11, 1998. We have several members
who are more than just amateur photographers, and have taken slides and prints of
orchids, some of which have been displayed at orchid shows.
John Lewis will talk about orchid photography in general, as well as AOS Award photography,
Lynn O'Shaughnessy has been taking pictures of her orchids for some time, and is
now into photographing her miniature orchids, and Dennis Moser will tell us about
digital photography.
As always, set-up and schmooze-time will be at 2:00 PM, with the program starting
promptly at 2:30. Please bring orchids and orchid related items for the Silent Auction
Table, and the Raffle Table.
Instead of our usual plant table, please bring paintings, photographs, engravings,
or other artwork featuring orchids of orchids you may have, whether you created the
artwork or not. If you have no artwork, antiques and collectibles such as tea cups,
jewelry and such is also welcome. You can, of course, still bring orchids in.
Announcements
Volunteering at Matthaei
If you have some free time and would like to help out in the orchid collection, please
call Connie Bailie at 998-7061. Help is needed with repotting, grooming and general
maintenance.
Ann Arbor Flower & Garden Show
Instead of our usual 8' x8' exhibit, we have been asked to put up an 8' x 24' exhibit,
with an educational emphasis. This endeavor will require more planning, building,
and painting, as well as having a member present at the exhibit throughout most of
the show. It's not as bad as it sounds! We have some initial ideas that need study
and smoothing out. A preliminary meeting will be held at Alex's house on January
14 at 7:00 pm. 4104 Thornoaks, Ann Arbor.
GLOS Meeting & Show will feature Jim Zablotney and other GLOS members on "Getting
Ready for Orchid Shows." The meeting will be on January 17 at 7:30 PM in Room
225, second floor of the Natural Resources Building. This is on the southwest corner
of Wilson Road and Farm Lane, across from the greenhouses, on MSU Campus in East
Lansing, MI. The area is north of Mt. Hope Road, east of Harrison and west of Hagadorn.
Enter the parking lot from Farm Lane. Use the door by the small loading dock on the
parking lot (south) side of the Natural Resources Building. The door will only be
open from 7:00 pm to 7:40 pm. Because of a building security policy the door is locked
at about 7:40 pm. They will be having their annual business meeting, as well as a
raffle and silent auction.
And speaking of getting ready for orchid shows, our next exhibit will be at the 15th
Annual Greater Lansing Orchid Society Orchid Show on February 28 and March 1 in the
Plant and Soil Science Conservatory on the campus of Michigan State University in
East Lansing. Setup is on Friday, February 27. The AAOS is putting in a 100 square
foot display so we will need lots of orchids for this show. We need someone to coordinate
this show, as well as members to help set up the display on Friday and tear it down
on Sunday. Last year we had a number of people involved.
If you have never helped with an exhibit before, this will be a good opportunity
to get involved. We will need help with putting sheet moss and labels on the orchids,
and many other easy odd jobs. If you are providing orchids in bloom, please start
grooming your plants now, so that they look their best for the show.
Exhibit Coordinators Needed
If you would like to coordinate one of our upcoming displays at an orchid show, please
contact Harry Winter at 761-5859. We need a coordinator for each of the following
shows:
Greater Lansing - February 27 - March 1
Michigan Orchid Society Show in Livonia - April 3-5
Ann Arbor Orchid Festival - April 16-18
Orchid Educational Class
This will be taught through MBG on February 14, 21 & 28 from 2 to 4 pm. This
short course is designed to help orchid growers by first educating them about the
botany and ecology of orchids, and how this translates to creating artificial environments.
The second session will be on the horticultural aspects of orchid growing - media,
repotting, watering, fertilizing, pest management, etc. The third session will be
on orchids that are easy to grow, and will be supplemented with color slides. Instructors
are Alex Challis, Connie Bailie and John Lewis. The cost for this class is $50. Call
MBG at 998-7061 to register. Last year the class filled up quickly.
Repotting Workshop
We will hold a potting workshop at 11:00 AM on March 15, just before our monthly
program. Details in the next issue.
AOS Award Winners
Lynn O'Shaughnessy brought several miniature orchids for judging, and two got awarded.
Pleurothallis corniculata `Free Spirit' and Scaphosepalum clavellatum
`Free Spirit' both received Certificates of Botanical Recognition at the
December monthly judging. The Pleurothallis was collected by Glenn Lehr in Ecuador,
and the Scaphosepalum was in Ray McCullough's collection. You don't have to be big
to get an award.
