THAT'S AN ORCHID?

Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, February 8, 1998. Alex Challis will talk about and show slides of some of the more peculiar and strangest looking orchids around. From lizard heads to red peppers to flying moustaches. There also might just be some culture or other educational stuff thrown in for good measure. Plants of some of these orchids will be available for purchase.

As always, set-up and schmooze-time will be at 2:00 PM, with the program starting promptly at 2:30. Please bring orchids and orchid related items for the Silent Auction Table, and the Raffle Table.

Please also bring your flowering orchids for the Plant Table. If it's cold out, you won't want to damage the flowers, especially if you are planning on taking the plant to the Lansing show. Put the orchids in a cardboard box, tape bamboo stakes in each corner and cover with plastic sheeting, dry cleaning bags work well.

Ann Arbor Flower & Garden Show

The name of our exhibit is: "An Orchid Affair, Living With Orchids", in keeping with the show's theme: "A Gardener's Fair". The display will be divided into three sections. The first will show orchids growing indoors under lights and on a windowsill, the second a greenhouse with orchids, and the third an outdoor area with a lath bench. This outdoor area will also serve as our demonstration area, where we will give various demos on potting, watering, and other aspects of orchid culture for the general public.

We will soon be painting and doing some preliminary construction at Matthaei, mostly on the weekends. If you would like to help, or have any ideas on the finer details, please contact Alex at 971-6186 or e-mail at EcuaOrq2@aol.com.

Exhibit Coordinators Needed

If you would like to coordinate one of our upcoming displays at an orchid show, please contact Harry Winter at 761-5859. We (still!) need a coordinator for each of the following shows:

Greater Lansing - February 27 - March 1
Michigan Orchid Society Show in Livonia - April 3-5
Ann Arbor Orchid Festival - April 16-18

AAOS Study Group

The next study group session will be 10:00 am, February 21 on Zygopetalums and their allies, at Yvonne Teske's house, 2759 Antietam Court, Ann Arbor, MI 48105 (313) 665-9368. Take Plymouth Road to Georgetown, go north past Bluett to Lexington Drive, the first right is Antietam Court, Yvonne's house is at the top of the circle.

Orchid Educational Class

An Orchid Educational Class through MBG will be taught on February 14, 21 & 28 from 2 pm to 4 min the Matthaei Botanic Garden auditorium. This short course is designed to help orchid growers by first educating them about the different types of orchids, their botany, biology and ecology in the wild, and how this translates to creating artificial environments. The second session will be on the horticultural aspects of orchid growing - media, repotting, watering, fertilizing, pest management, etc. The third session will be on orchids that are easy to grow, especially those that can be grown on windowsills and under artificial lights, and will be supplemented with color slides. Instructors are Alex Challis, Connie Bailie and John Lewis. The cost for this class is $50. Call MBG at 998-7061 to register. Last year the class filled up quickly. There is a 10% discount price for Friends of the Gardens. Membership is $35 for an individual, or $50 for a family membership.

Potting Workshop

Before our meeting on March 15, we will have a potting workshop at 11:00 am in the Matthaei auditorium. Several of our "experts" will each have a work station where you can get your orchids potted, divided, or mounted. If you want, you can of course do it yourself. The workshop is designed primarily for beginners who don't have much experience in potting orchids, but any AAOS member may attend, and either help out or learn something. There is no charge for potting media, or you can bring your own. We will have pots, rhizome clips, and other materials available for purchase from our store if you don't have these materials. Almost everything is back in stock now. As we plan on going right up to 2:00 pm, we will have pizza and soda available. If you like, feel free to bring a dish to pass.

New AOS Book

We now have copies of Growing Orchids Under Lights by Charles Marden Fitch. Topics include Light Quality, Garden Design, Fluorescent and High-Intensity fixtures and indoor equipment. The retail price is $18, but AAOS members can purchase this book for $15. Other books available are AOS Orchid Pests & Diseases, $12, Orchids Simplified, $17.00, and the Taylor Guide to Orchids, $20.
