Announcements

AAOS SHOW--We still have three positions that we need to fill for our upcoming orchid show in April. First, we need a Publicity Assistant to help our Publicity Director Wendy Frisch. Duties would include creating fliers and posters, distributing them to various sites around Ann Arbor, and working with the local media. Second, we need two Hospitality CoSupervisors (the AAOS Board recently decided to split what was originally a volunteer stint for one person into ajob that two people could share). Duties of the hospitality co-supervisors are to: (1) oversee the set-up, serving, and clean-up of the Friday set-up meal (light snacks & drinks to be available 12:00 noon to 7:00pm for the vendors, exhibitors and AAOS volunteers); (2) oversee the Friday night buffet-style Preview Party; (3) oversee the set-up, serving, and clean-up of the Saturday Judges/Clerks breakfast (donutsfbagels & drinks to be available 7:30am to 8:00am); (4) oversee the set-up, serving, and clean-up of the Saturday Judge's luncheon (buffet-style meal at 12:00 noon); (5) coordinate a balanced menu with the help of willing AAOS volunteers; and (6) purchase any necessary foods or rent any food-related items required. (Don't worry, AAOS pays, not the Co-Supervisors).

We're grateful to Barb Larime for agreeing to be Volunteer Supervisor. Duties of the volunteer supervisor are to (1) recruit and organize adequate numbers of workers from among members for specificjob functions and schedules; (2) work with show chairperson to insure adequate member participation; (3) assist the various volunteers throughout the show (Friday-Sunday) to facilitate a smooth operation. For each of these positions there will be plenty of assistance from the Show Committee, so you won't be left on your own. If you would like to volunteer for any of the vacant positions or have any questions about them, please call me (971-6186) or see me at our February meeting--Alex Challis

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS--The nomination committee requests member input as we draw up a slate of candidates to be announced at our March meeting. We would like to hear your thoughts about the Society--do you like the way things are going, or would you like to see some changes? We would also like recommendations for nominees. The following is a list of the offices which need to be filled, with the incumbent's name in parentheses if the person who currently holds that office is eligible (according to our by-laws) and willing to serve again if reelected: President (Connie Bailie); Vice President (Harry Winter); Director (Glenn Lehr); Secretary (Barb Larime); and Treasurer. (Please contact one of the committee members with your input: Don Fishel (313-475-9831or ); Ruth Kittle (810-43'7-8827), or Chuck Zill (313-665-5097) [Editor's note - members of the nominating committee are themselves eligible to be nominated, as well].-Don Fishel

ARE ANY OF YOUR PLANTS VIRUSED?--Do any of your plants show peculiar, parallel streaks in their leaves? When they bloom, are the petals or sepals marked with asymmetrical blotches or streaks of darker or lighter colors ("color break")? Have once vigorously-growing plants become sickly, even though you reported them at the right part of their growth cycle, used an appropriate potting medium, and watered them properly? Such problems can often be caused by viruses, but the only way to know for sure is to have your plants tested. Orchid viruses are not only incurable; they are also contagious and can spread to other plants. As part of a new AAOS project, plants will be accepted for testing at the February meeting at a charge of $2.50 or $3. Forms will be available then. For @er information about our new virustesting program, contact Harry Winter (761-5859).
