Growing Orchids - Flasks and Seedlings

This summer we expanded our orchid collection by obtaining flasks. This is our third attempt at growing plants from flasks. 1st .attempt - all died. Reasons many. 2nd. attempt - spring of this year. Some survived the ravages of a hungry rabbit (the first rabbit ever seen in this area in twenty years - was it drawn by the tasty but tiny new growths?) and a busy squirrel ( he emptied the top portions of the newly planted compots which were put up higher out of the rabbits reach). Those plants which were lucky enough to not be disturbed are healthy but still small. 3rd. attempt - we found big flasks, enticingly described with the crosses and anticipated blossom descriptions, which we couldn't resist. Big flasks contain many, many, plants. Just how many plants is still unknown - as there are still some to be deflasked and potted.

These little plantlets are thriving and are growing much faster in size than those from this spring. They were not subjected to outdoor conditions as were those of the second attempt and are in a controlled greenhouse environment. Perhaps the "2nd. attempt" seedlings will catch up in size and vigor now that they are indoors.

As we learn from the experience of this endeavor, we will be glad to share with you the knowledge and pitfalls of growing such tiny new plants.
