Earlier this summer it came to the attention of Sylvia Walker that the US EPA Safe Drinking Water Act, Lead
and Copper Rule would cause phosphorus to be added to our city water. Sylvia contacted the Detroit Water and
Sewage Department and received the following reply from Judith I. Huddleston, Water Production and Operations
Manager:
" The City of Detroit Water and Sewerage Department will begin adding phosphoric acid to the water supply at
1.0 parts per million or as phosphate at 0.32 parts per million. This is expected to have a negligible effect on the
PH of the water."
A copy of the Water Department laboratory analysis of water samples was reviewed at our last board meeting. It
was agreed that this addition of phosphorus would have no effect with regard to growing orchids.
